Dents

Three dimensional measurements make much improved characterization of dents. With the 0.3 x 0.3 inch (7 x 7 mm) field of view of the standard gauge or the larger area of 4D InSpec XL, you can measure a lot of dents edge to edge. A great depth of field, up to 0.1″ (2.5 mm) deep—0.35″ or 9mm for the XL—means you’ll see from the from surface to bottom of the pit.

Feature Analysis tools built into the software can then immediately determine whether any of the dents in the measurement put your part out of use, or are small enough to rework or ignore.

In the screen image above of a punched divot, the false-color height map on the left shows the puckered burr surrounding the lip of the dent. The Feature Statistics table isolates the divot from the burr and the scratches that are near it, and reports the depth of the divot (-5.101 mils) and its area (7714 square mils). The table even calculates the volume of the dent, and its width (115.9 mils)

Taking a measurement like this, and the analysis, takes a few seconds, and can be done on the shop floor — no need to send a part off to the lab anymore!
